Facebook is Losing Subscribers, Including Me

April 12, 2013 – There are a few studies out there that indicate Facebook is becoming less appealing to folks while Twitter and Instagram are getting more and more subscribers.

There was even a study done that links alcohol and marijuana use to Facebook. No big surprise there.Facebook logo

I had a Facebook account that I used primarily to share my blog. Cancelled my account twice. This last time is for good. All but a handful of my “friends” were family members, which didn’t offer much for conversation or worth while debates. I mean who the hell wants to debate and piss off family. Nothing ever good comes from that little scenario. I got drawn into a few stupid arguments and drama which of course ended on a negative note. So easy to do when your typing away on a computer and your opponent isn’t in your face.

My news feed, depending on the day of the week, consisted of endless bible quotes and pictures of Jesus in every pose you’ve ever seen him in; people advertising their small businesses, which if not for friends and family probably wouldn’t have a chance. None of which ever gets a bad review or negative feedback. Of course why would they, their main client base consists of close family and friends. No, I won’t be the one playing critic here no matter how bad they might need to hear it. Not gonna get involved with anyone’s love fest. Nuff said.

So any way I finally said the hell with the family drama and all the self gratification that goes on with Facebook people. It was anything but interesting and meaningful.

The problem I faced was that I am very opinionated, and most folks can’t handle the truth, at least not in front of others. What I mean is, in the public where everyone can see and hear, people tend to be very reserved and “sensitive,” not wanting anyone to know how they really feel. Funny how people wear those two masks depending on the company they keep. Me? Don’t care what you think about me. Everyone knows how I feel about specific classes of people, and if you ask me I’ll tell you. I don’t need to hide behind a computer to express my beliefs. That was a problem sharing my blog on Facebook. I found myself editing so as not to offend certain people because of their morals or religious beliefs. I made my wife cringe on more than one occasion.

Of course there were a few, and they shall remain anonymous, that agreed with everything I ever said on Facebook. They just wouldn’t admit it to the rest. You know who you are.

I always thought it funny that out of all my blog subscribers there are three from Facebook. One happens to be my wife. So yea, Facebook was a big waste of time. I probably pissed off more of those people than I really know, and I did it purely out of boredom.  Sorta my way of humoring myself I suppose. I admit, my sense of humor is a bit raw and catches some folks off guard. Might say I’m a natural smart-ass like that.

So maybe Facebook with family wasn’t such a great idea after all. It was kinda like being a tuxedo in a room full of brown shoes. -JRoycroft
